Working with an abundance of historical materials, the Takaoka Municipal Museum communicates the history, traditional industry, and folkways of Takaoka. The Museum is home to an extensive collection of valuable materials that need to be catalogued, including ancient documents donated by local citizens and others every year. While Takaoka was spared the ravages of bombing during World War II and retains a wealth of historical materials, there is a severe shortage of people available to read through these materials.
Formed last April (2015), the Takaoka Ancient Document Volunteers organization allows local residents to contribute to research on and the cataloguing of unexamined historical materials at the Museum and other materials not yet examined within the community.
These activities seek not just to promote and advance the history and culture of the Takaoka region, but to provide learning opportunities for the volunteers themselves. Anyone with even the slightest interest in Takaoka’s history and culture is welcome. Since volunteers read the materials together in enjoyable ways, they don’t even need to be able to read ancient documents fluently. You might even discover something new about Takaoka’s history!
For those with no experience in researching or cataloguing ancient documents, the Museum also offers a course entitled “Introduction to Ancient Documents” .
